Every Romain pickup is handwound and hand-assembled in Ontario, Canada, using carefully selected components — Alnico magnets, custom-cut wood spacers, quality flatwork, and wire sourced from trusted suppliers in Canada and the USA. We control every part of the process in-house because every part of a pickup directly shapes its tone. There's no stage of this we're willing to hand off.
Why Handwound Sounds Different
Machine-wound pickups are consistent by design. Ours aren't — and that's the point. Wound on a traditional winding machine with tension, layering, and pattern controlled entirely by hand, each pickup develops its own character through the process. Two pickups built to the same spec won't sound identical. Hey there, my name's Jas.
"I didn't come to guitar through a class or a phase — it's been my biggest passion since I was old enough to hold one, and that hasn't changed. I never played in a famous band or earned a living from it, and I won't pretend otherwise. What I can tell you is that guitar has been a constant in my life the way eating and sleeping are: not optional, not occasional, just always there. That obsession goes deep into tone — the pursuit of it, the nuance of it, the way the right pickup can make a guitar finally sound like itself."
"Growing up in a small Northern Ontario town without easy access to guitar repair meant figuring things out the hard way — on my own pulling things apart, learning what made them work, and developing an ear for what sounded right versus what just sounded fine. That hands-on approach eventually led me to rewinding pickups, then building my own. Romain Pickups exists because I wanted to make something I'd actually put in my own guitars — nothing more, nothing less. Every pickup I wind comes from that same place: a lifetime of loving this instrument and refusing to settle for tone that doesn't move me."
