Pickup "Upgrades": 2 Ways it can Suck! | The FiftyNiner Winder Show S2E2
In this episode of the tone chasing saga that we celebrate on the FiftyNiner Winder Show, we hammer on my old 1992 Squier MIJ "Wayne's World" Stratocaster. Listen to the cheap bottom of the bag riff as I cycle through each of the 5 pickup selector switch positions.
If you're interested in the set of pickups I have in this Stratocaster, you can find there HERE.
Next we drill into issues with two guitars that came in for separate issues, both ended up with the camera being shut off during the "table top" videos I intended to make with these. Instead, we discuss the difficulties with off-brand/small brand imported guitars and the sizing/fitment issues you can run into when trying to upgrade the stock pickups.
The first is a Sire Larry Carlton L7 Les Paul copy with P90's, and the second is a really nice Schecter KM7 MKii with "upgraded" aftermarket pickups that turned out to be downgrades.
When shopping for upgrade pickups for your guitar, or pickups for your guitar builds, pay close attention to the details and materials they use...or better yet, contact a small pickup maker in your area or online and start a conversation. It's better to spend a little more time or money on good stuff than risk a major pain in the arse down the road.
